Lip-reading expert reveals what Bellingham asked the referee before being sent off

A forensic lip reader has 'revealed' what Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham said to referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero before being sent off in their La Liga match against Osasuna.

Bellingham was caught off guard in the 40th minute of Saturday's game when Montero gave a straight red card for a clear dissent.

At the time, Real Madrid had the advantage thanks to Kylian Mbappe, but after being reduced to 10 men, Los Blancos left the Estadio El Sadar with a point after a penalty converted by Ante Budimir.

Speaking after the full whistle, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti gave insight into why Bellingham was sent off, after suggesting a misunderstanding between the player and the referee.

"I think the referee didn't understand Jude Bellingham's English," Ancelotti said. "I won't say more about the referee because I want to be on the bench next week."

Bellingham, who risked punishment earlier this month when he confronted an official, also commented on the controversial incident as he downplayed the 41-year-old referee's "insult".

He said: "I have never insulted the referee, I am glad to see that there is video to show the reality despite the referee's report. I am here to apologise to my teammates for putting them in a difficult situation today."

The England international was sent off for a simple protest at the referee, according to forensic lip reader Nicola Hickling.

Speaking to Jeff Bet, Hickling claimed Bellingham said the following after running to the official: "Throwback, it's a throw-in."

A moment later, Jose Luis Munuera Montero proceeded to show a red card, saying: "You're out. Get out" – with the Real Madrid midfielder's only response being "What?" with a shocked expression.

The latest incident comes after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez called for the Spanish federation to bring in referees from the Premier League to improve the standard of referees in La Liga.Telegraph/
