Interior design trends often don't take into account the long-term practicality of furniture. Many popular household items, decor and accessories, are a nightmare to clean as they trap dust, dirt and debris that contribute to a messy and dirty household.

Dusting, washing and thorough disinfection takes a lot of time, especially in households with children and pets. If you don't pay attention to the details, you may not realize how dirty these items have become because it is not always visible from the outside.

Kitchen cabinet handles

There are hundreds of designs that transform standard cabinets into modern, classic, and eclectic styles, while the semicircular, downward-facing models in particular are a challenge to clean.

Every time you pull on these handles, your fingers leave behind a little bit of oil or dirt, which slowly builds up over time. Since the bottom is hidden, you can't see how dirty they are and it's easy to forget to clean them. More decorative styles also have small bumps and scratches on the bottom, making it even more difficult to clean tight crevices.

Toothbrush holders

The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) conducted a study in 2011 that found that toothbrush holders were the third most contaminated item in the home. Many people store their toothbrushes in a holder and with a lid, thinking they are doing their best to keep their brushes germ-free.

If you use these accessories to protect your toothbrush from bacteria, you should also clean them. It is recommended to wash the holder with warm soapy water and wipe it with a non-toxic disinfectant at least once or twice a week. When storing your toothbrush, make sure it is upright and not against someone else's toothbrush, so that the bristles can air dry freely. The American Dental Association (ADA) does not recommend using a cap at all, as a closed environment is favorable for germs.

Pillows, blankets and rugs

Faux fur textiles are a luxurious addition to homes, offering comfort and elegance at the same time. These pillows, blankets, and rugs are made from a polyester blend to mimic real animal fur. Although pleasant to the touch, faux fur and fur-style materials get dirty easily and are difficult to clean.

Dirt and debris easily get trapped in the long fibers, and when it's time to wash them, you can't just throw them in the washing machine. Machine washing weakens the fibers and the high temperature causes them to clump together in an unrecognizable shape. /Telegrafi/
