The Baltic countries closed their borders to all cars with Russian license plates

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have closed the borders for all cars registered in Russia, it was announced today by the official press release of the government in Tallinn.

In accordance with the instructions of the European Commission, as of this morning, no one can enter Estonia with a car with Russian license plates, the Ministry of the Interior announced.

The three Baltic states are applying the same rules as a measure against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Telegraph reports.

Cars with Russian license plates cannot cross the external borders of the three NATO and EU member states, and if they do not return where they came from, they can be confiscated.

There are exceptions to the rule, as in the case of transit in the Russian city of Kaliningrad. Vehicles belonging to diplomatic and consular missions are also excluded.

Cars with Russian license plates can leave the Baltic countries and cross the EU's external border if they are used exclusively as a means of transport.

On September 8, the European Commission clarified that, as part of European sanctions against Russia, vehicles registered in Russia can no longer enter EU territory, either for private or commercial purposes. /Telegraph/
