The Starlink satellite network, owned by SpaceX, suffered a severe blow after a geomagnetic storm destroyed 40 satellites.

The damage will cost SpaceX and its CEO Elon Musk dearly, after a geomagnetic storm destroyed 40 of the 49 Starlink satellites launched on February 3.

The geomagnetic storm was 50 percent stronger than previous launches and prevented the satellites from entering proper orbit around Earth.

And while Starlink has tried to make the satellites fly over the edge to reduce drag, it is thought that 40o will burn them up in the Earth's atmosphere instead of reaching their destinations.

SpaceX recently passed the mark of 2,000 launched satellites and plans to launch another 12 thousand if not more. Losing 40 satellites might not be a big deal, but it's still expensive because most of the satellites launched by the Falcon 9 rocket have been written off. /Telegraph/
