Rescue teams have found the wreckage of a plane that disappeared in a cloudy mountain range in Indonesia with 11 people on board.

The plane, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, is believed to have crashed as it approached mountains on the island of Sulawesi on Saturday.

According to foreign media, the ATR 42-500 disappeared from radar at 13:17 p.m. after being instructed by air traffic control to correct its position before a planned landing in the provincial capital of Makassar.

It was carrying eight crew members and three passengers as part of a maritime surveillance mission.

A rescue helicopter trying to find the site of the wreckage on Sunday morning first spotted a small plane window in a forested area on Mount Bulusaraung.

Ground search teams then encountered larger debris scattered on a steep northern slope.

This wreckage was consistent with the main body and tail, according to the head of the Makassar Search and Rescue Office, Muhammad Arif Anwar.

He told a press conference: "The discovery of the main sections of the plane significantly narrows the search area and provides an important clue for narrowing the search area."

The Southeast Asian country has experienced several fatal accidents in recent years and has a poor record on air safety.
