EU and OSCE condemn the murder of a judge in Albania: Attack on the rule of law

The Delegation of the European Union to Albania and the OSCE have reacted by strongly condemning the serious incident in which Judge Astrit Kalaja was killed and two citizens were injured inside the Court of Appeal in Tirana, which occurred today at around 15:00 PM.
The European Union Delegation to Albania expresses shock and strongly condemns the criminal act, as this institution has called it.
"The European Union Delegation to Albania is shocked by the act of violence that led to the murder of Judge Kalaja and the injury of two Albanian citizens. We strongly condemn this criminal act," the statement said.
The EU expressed its deepest condolences to the family of Judge Kalaja and stressed the immediate need for increased security.
"This tragedy underscores the urgent need for Albania to increase the security of judges and prosecutors and take all necessary measures to ensure security in courtrooms," the statement further said.
The EU reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting the consolidation of justice reform and the strengthening of the rule of law in the country.
Meanwhile, the OSCE Presence in Albania also expressed its grief and strongly condemned the serious act.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the shooting inside the Court of Appeal in Tirana, which took the life of Judge Astrit Kalaja and injured two other people," the OSCE said in a statement.
The organization expressed its condolences to the family and colleagues of Judge Kalaja and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
"The OSCE Presence strongly condemns this violent act. Attacks against judges are direct attacks on the rule of law and democratic institutions," the OSCE statement said.
The OSCE welcomed the swift arrest of the perpetrator and underlined the importance of a full and prompt legal process to ensure justice is served.
“The Presence stands in solidarity with the judicial community of Albania and remains committed to supporting efforts that strengthen the security and independence of the judicial system,” the statement concludes.
