The most expensive green 'stone' in the world is sold for 9 million dollars

A rare 37-carat square emerald owned by the Aga Khan has sold at an auction in Geneva for nearly $9 million, making it the world's most expensive green 'stone'.

The Cartier diamond and emerald brooch, which can also be worn as a pendant, dethrones a piece made by fashion house Bulgari - given by Richard Burton as a wedding gift to Elizabeth Taylor, the Telegraph reports.

In 1960, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan commissioned Cartier to set the emerald in a brooch with 20 marquise-cut diamonds for British socialite Nina Dyer, to whom he was briefly married.

Dyer then auctioned off the emerald to raise money for the animals in 1969. Rare diamonds and emeralds are otherwise in high demand, and auctions are often held where they sell for staggering sums.

There are even special auctions for their sale that arouse great interest of those who are "in love" with these ornaments. /Telegraph/
