According to a survey carried out by the International Republican Institute (IRI), the citizens of Kosovo have expressed massive support for the country's membership in the European Union (EU) and NATO, while they have shown concerns about the increase in tensions with Serbia.
The poll, which took place from May 6 to 27, 2024, revealed that 92% of Kosovars would vote for EU membership if a referendum were held today, while 94% would support NATO membership.
Paul McCarthy, Director of Europe for IRI, said that the people of Kosovo believe that closer ties with the West will bring economic progress and national security.
Strong support is also expressed for democratic governance, with 85% of respondents believing that democracy is the best form of government for the country.
The survey shows that 92% of citizens consider it important to include women in political decision-making, while 89% demand the representation of young people.
However, the citizens of Kosovo are worried about the increase in tensions with Serbia.
According to the poll, there has been a 17 percentage point increase in the number of those who are worried that these tensions could lead to a bigger conflict.
When asked about the most important problems facing the country, the economy and cost of living were listed as the top concerns, while unemployment was identified as the second most important problem.
Health insecurity, immigration, corruption, poverty and public safety were ranked next.
Data were collected through face-to-face interviews from 1,200 Kosovo citizens aged 18 and over.
The survey shows a thirst for active participation in the national and local elections of 2025, emphasizing the importance of the representation of women and young people in the political process./Telegrafi/
