Macedonia, the fifth poorest country in Europe

With a GDP per capita of 6.608.08 US dollars, North Macedonia ranks 5th in the list of the poorest countries in Europe in 2023, published by the German portal Derwensten.

"Is Germany really one of the poorest countries in Europe? That's how some feel given the widening social gap. We clarify which countries are the ten poorest countries in Europe in 2023", the article reads. The list is headed by Kosovo in second place, Albania in fourth and Macedonia in fifth.

"In the course of a name dispute with neighboring Greece, North Macedonia only got its own name from 2019. Sportingly, the country drew attention to itself when it sensationally won against the German national football team in the 2022 Cup qualifiers of the World Cup in Duisburg and surprisingly won against European champions Italy in the subsequent play-offs.

However, this cannot hide the fact that North Macedonia is one of the poorest countries in Europe….The country suffers from high unemployment and relatively low export earnings, which results in a large foreign trade deficit. . The most important export goods are food, wine, iron and steel. North Macedonia submitted an application for EU membership in 2004. A year later, the country was granted the official status of a candidate country," the portal's ranking states.

The list is created on the basis of GDP per capita (GDP reflects the value of all goods and services produced in a country) divided by the number of inhabitants to compile a more accurate and comparable list of the poorest countries in Europe. The poorest country in Europe, Ukraine, with a GDP of $4.348.57. Then Kosovo, the second poorest country with a GDP of 5.290.48 USD. Third place - Moldova with GDP per capita 5.671.22 US dollars. Fourth place – Albania. The Gross Domestic Product of this country is 6.457.22 dollars per inhabitant.
