The psychotherapist determined the ideal age difference between a man and a woman for their relationship to survive.

Specifically, a distance of up to three years is ideal, psychotherapist Eloise Skinner tells Metro.co.uk. The reason is that you are both at similar stages of life.

"You are more likely to have similar financial expectations when it comes to spending, saving and investing, as well as health," she said.

She added that research shows that the level of relationship satisfaction decreases over time in couples with a large age difference.

"According to research, couples with a large age gap may have a harder time coping with challenges in marriage compared to couples of a similar age," she stated. Among the most serious challenges that arise is starting a family.

"If a person is much older, there may be problems with conception, a mismatch in parenting styles and a greater likelihood of a child losing one parent while still relatively young," she said.

She added that financial planning, where one person retires while another takes on greater financial risks, can also be a significant problem.
