An engineer turned entrepreneur has created Europe¿s biggest aircraft salvage yard in the heart of the English countryside.Hedgerows and green fields give way to a site where up to 60 massive passenger aircraft are dismantled into more than 2,000 parts each, every year. At Kemble-Cotswold Airport, near Cirencester, Glocs, director Mark Gregory runs the family firm taking apart aircraft which might once have taken you on holiday. From massive 747s to workhorse-like turbo propeller aircraft, many of the world¿s planes face their final destination under an Air Salvage International (ASI) engineer¿s wrench. The most valuable parts like the engines are worth up to £18million each, and even a joystick from the cockpit can fetch around £11,000. The spare parts can be re-used in other aircraft or sections are increasingly being sold to training companies where they are used for pilots, aircrew and even counter-terror drills. Environmentally Mark¿s team manage to recycle an incredible 98 percent of most of the multi-million-pound aircraft, down to the porthole windows and even the seatbelt buckles.
