Whistles, egg-throwing and chants of "Go away, go away!" - Vučić is not welcomed by thousands of Niš citizens

A large number of citizens gathered in Niš today in a counter-protest against the rally of supporters of Aleksandar Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

According to footage published by local media, citizens are whistling and calling out to participants in the SNS rally. There is a heavy police presence at the scene, which is not allowing protesters to approach the venue where the rally is being held.

At one point, the protesters chanted "Go away, go away!", writes nova.rs.

Meanwhile, SNS supporters gathered with party and state flags, while patriotic music could be heard from the space where the rally was taking place.

Serbian President Vučić gave a speech in front of the National Theater in Niš, where a rally of government supporters was taking place.

At around 11:34, a police cordon stopped students, citizens and war veterans on Vozhdova Street, about 300 meters from the National Theater. They oppose Vučić's arrival in the city and demanded that the police allow them to pass, as the president had previously stated.

The protesters used whistles and vuvuzelas, while chanting insulting slogans against Vučić and demanding to be allowed to approach the theater to express their position.

Later, the situation became tense. Police and gendarmerie, equipped with riot gear, confronted citizens. Protesters threw eggs at the police, while law enforcement pushed back the demonstrators and used shields.

The protestors' column then continued to move, while additional gendarmerie units were sent to the scene. /Telegraph/
