The case only came to light when neighbours of Amravati Devi, in the city of Varanasi in northern India's Uttar Pradesh state, started complaining about the smell. Police forced their way into the house and were shocked to find her badly decomposed body in a bedroom. They also found embalming chemicals but said it appeared the children had not known how to use them as the body was almost unrecognisable. Mrs Devi reportedly died in hospital in January but her children told neighbours that she was still alive but bedridden. Her five sons and one daughter are accused of concealing her dead body so they could carry on spending her 40,000-INR (438-GBP) monthly pension. Mrs Devi was a widow who had lived with her five sons Ravi Prakash, Jyoti Prakash, Girish Prakash, Yogeshwar Prakash, Dev Prakash and daughter Vijay Lakshmi since the death of her husband. She received such a large sum, by Indian standards, because her husband was a senior customs official and because she was also supporting the families of her sons. A few days after her death, four of the sons moved out of the house, with their families, leaving only Ravi Prakash and his sister Vijay Lakshmi with the body. Neighbour Chedi Lal said: "Whenever we would inquire about his mother, he would politely reply that she had become weak and unable to walk, while she was already dead." Police say that Ravi Prakash had admitted concealing the death of his mother for about five months. He and his siblings had used her thumb impression to carry on collecting her pension as they had no other means of support, he reportedly said. Fëmijët e një gruaje 70-vjeçe kishin mbajtur kufomën e saj në shtëpi për më shumë se pesë muaj, me qëllim që të mund të marrin pensionin e saj.

Amravati Devi nga Varanasi në pjesën veriore të Indisë, raportohet se kishte vdekur në spital në janar të këtij viti, por gjashtë fëmijët e saj u kishin thënë fqinjëve se ajo është ende gjallë por se vazhdimisht po e humb vetëdijen, transmeton Telegrafi.
