US President Donald Trump has made a controversial statement regarding Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, claiming that he is gay.

Trump said that information about Khamenei's sexual orientation comes from classified US intelligence and CIA reports, without publishing evidence for his claim.

"Under my administration, the once powerful and fearsome regime, which constantly attacked America, was finally overthrown. Its former leaders were eliminated and it is now led by a homosexual dictator," he declared.

The American leader's statement has caused reactions, while there has not yet been an official comment from Iranian authorities or from Mojtaba Khamenei himself.

Khamenei, who reportedly succeeded Iran's supreme leader, is the country's highest political and religious figure, with broad powers over the military, foreign policy and key state institutions. /Telegraph
