Trump concludes China visit - trade deal and Iran discussions
US President Donald Trump has wrapped up his official visit to Beijing, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The meeting was characterized by soft tones and declarations of improving relations between the two superpowers.
Trump declared that the United States had reached a "fantastic trade deal" with China, describing the meeting as successful.
He also again called Xi Jinping a "friend," noting that the two have known each other for nearly 12 years and that he has "great respect" for the Chinese leader.
During the talks, the two leaders also discussed the situation in Iran. Trump said the US and China share "very similar positions" on the issue and that they aim for the stability of sea lanes and oil supplies, stressing that "we don't want them to have nuclear weapons."
In a symbolic moment of the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping gifted Trump with rose seeds during a walk around the residence.
For its part, China's Foreign Ministry called on the US and Iran to accelerate diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement, while Beijing praised the meeting as having helped strengthen bilateral cooperation and "contributes to global stability."
The visit ended with a calm atmosphere and messages of reconciliation, leaving the impression of a new rapprochement between Washington and Beijing after periods of trade tensions. /Telegraph/
