US President Donald Trump has announced that his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, will travel to Moscow with a proposal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Afterwards, they are expected to go to Kiev to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump described Witkoff and Kushner as "great negotiators" and said they have done a great job in trying to find a diplomatic solution.
"They are bringing with them a proposal to end the war," he said, without revealing details of the American plan. He added that there is a possibility that new diplomatic efforts will bring results.
Speaking about the difficulties in reaching an agreement, the 80-year-old also linked the impasse to the personal relationship between the leaders of the two countries.
"It's a personal problem between Russia and Ukraine. President Zelensky and President Putin really hate each other," he declared.
According to the American leader, this strong hostility between the two leaders is hindering progress towards a peace agreement.
Witkoff and Kushner's mission comes as negotiations between Moscow and Kiev remain deadlocked, with fighting and airstrikes continuing. The visit to Moscow is expected to be followed by a meeting in Kiev, where the two US envoys will hold their first talks with Zelensky in Ukraine.
Trump has expressed optimism about the possibility of an agreement, but so far the concrete terms of the proposal have not been made public and it remains unclear whether Moscow and Kiev are willing to accept it as a basis for negotiations. /Telegraph
