Rutte, Burnham and Meloni in support of Germany after Russian hybrid attack in Leipzig

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have expressed their full support for Germany following the Russian hybrid attack in Leipzig on August 4.

Rutte said NATO stands in "full solidarity" with Germany, stressing that the evidence of Russian involvement is clear.

"I just spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. NATO stands in full solidarity with Germany after the Russian hybrid attack in Leipzig on August 4. The evidence is clear and I welcome the measures announced by Germany in response to this attack," he stated.

Rutte added that NATO will continue to strengthen capacities to prevent and counter any threats to member countries, including malicious actions similar to those reported in Leipzig and other Alliance countries.

"Russia's attempts to intimidate us, to undermine our unity and our willingness to support Ukraine are futile and will fail," Rutte said, reiterating NATO's unwavering support for Ukraine and commitment to collective defense.

Burnham: Brazen and reckless attack

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also expressed full support for Germany, describing the Russian attack as "brazen and reckless."

"The UK stands fully with Germany following the brazen and reckless Russian attack in Leipzig. Russia's attempts to undermine our shared resolve and willingness to support Ukraine are futile and doomed to fail," Burnham said.

He said Britain's commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defence against Russian invasion is "strong and unwavering".

According to him, the measures taken by the German government show that any attack of this nature will receive a clear response.

"We will not waver in our determination to prevent attacks on our freedom and security," Burnham said.

Meloni: The security of allies is the security of everyone

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also came out in support of Germany, saying that Italy stands fully with Berlin.

"Italy stands fully with Germany after the Russian hybrid attack in Leipzig. The security of our allies is the security of all of us," Meloni said.

She warned that attempts to intimidate allies or create divisions among them will not succeed.

"Hybrid actions against any of us are a cause for concern for all of us and we will respond to them unitedly," the Italian prime minister said.

Meloni also stressed the importance of maintaining unity, close cooperation and a reliable preventive capacity to protect the security of citizens.

The statements by the three European leaders come after Germany announced measures in response to what it describes as a Russian hybrid attack in Leipzig. /Telegraph
