Trump becomes the first sitting US president to appear on a coin
The US Mint has released the 2026 $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump, marking the first time a sitting US president has appeared on a coin intended for everyday use.
The coin, called the "gold dollar," is now in circulation. The US Mint has urged citizens to check their change, while collectors can buy it in rolls of 25 coins or in bags of 100 coins. The price is $61 for a roll and $154.50 for a bag.
However, finding it in everyday change can be difficult, as $1 coins are used much less frequently in the US than banknotes, euronews writes.
For collectors, there is also a more special version. The US Mint has produced 250,000 coins on July 4th, which bear a special “July 4th” mark.
Despite its golden color, the coin contains no gold. It is composed of 88.5 percent copper, with smaller amounts of zinc, manganese, and nickel. The coin was minted in Philadelphia and bears no specific mint mark.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Trump, created by Joseph Menna based on an official White House photograph. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the dates 1776–2026 are included.
On the back is the US presidential seal, while the number 250 has been added to the eagle's shield, marking the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.
There is historical precedent, but not quite the same. President Calvin Coolidge appeared alongside George Washington on a 50-cent coin in 1926, commemorating the 150th anniversary of independence. However, it was a commemorative coin and not a coin intended for everyday circulation.
Meanwhile, the legal basis for placing the image of a sitting president on a currency that circulates in daily use has been challenged. /Telegraph/
