Iran has rejected a ceasefire proposal presented by US President Donald Trump, which was conveyed to Tehran through Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi.
According to a report by The New York Times , Iranian authorities rejected an interim agreement because it did not address the key issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian and Iraqi sources said the Iraqi delegation held meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials to discuss the American offer.
According to sources, the Iranian leadership described the proposal as unacceptable, arguing that a temporary ceasefire makes no sense without an agreement on the status and control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea routes for global oil transport.
The rejection comes at a time when Trump has warned of the possibility of a much larger attack on Iran if a diplomatic solution is not reached, while US military operations against Iranian targets continue.
The Strait of Hormuz remains the main point of disagreement between the parties, as Iran considers control over this maritime corridor as an essential element of its security and strategic interests, while the United States seeks to guarantee freedom of navigation for international transport. /Telegraph
