US President Donald Trump has lashed out at former President Barack Obama as he defended the proposed new deal with Iran, claiming the Obama administration had given Tehran "a planeload of cash."

Speaking at the G7 summit in France, he said his deal with Iran would be completely different from the 2015 nuclear deal, which he called "catastrophic."

"Obama bribed the Iranians with a plane full of money. He gave them billions of dollars and an open path to a nuclear weapon. That won't happen to me," the 80-year-old declared.

The American leader added that the current memorandum of understanding with Iran is not yet a final agreement and warned that the United States could resume bombing if Tehran does not respect its obligations.

"If they violate the agreement, we will drop bombs on their heads. If I don't like the way they're acting, we will revert to military action," Trump said.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Obama's nuclear deal for years, claiming that his administration transferred billions of dollars in cash to Iran. However, the Obama administration argued that it was about returning Iranian funds frozen for decades after a legal dispute between the two countries.

According to the American president, the new agreement being negotiated with Iran will be "fair and strong," while emphasizing that sanctions will not be lifted immediately and that any relief will depend on Tehran's behavior. /Telegraph
