US President Donald Trump has signaled a more moderate approach towards Iran, saying Tehran is "more serious than ever" about holding talks, while toning down previous statements about a major military strike.
During a White House event on nuclear technology, Trump said he had not yet made a decision to launch "massive attacks" on Iran, despite previously stating that such an option was under consideration.
"Right now, we're talking to them, so there probably won't be a tipping point that would lead to a massive attack," the 80-year-old told reporters in the Oval Office, Skynews writes.
The new reaction follows previous warnings that the United States was ready for strong military action against Iran. However, this time the US president hinted that a diplomatic deal remains a possibility.
Trump said the US and Iran could continue "as we are now" or they could reach a deal to resolve the crisis.
The American leader also dismissed claims that the upcoming US elections are influencing his foreign policy decisions, stating: "Despite what everyone says about the midterm elections, I'm in no rush."
