Two people have been seriously injured after a passenger train derailed between Haywards Heath and Lewes, in East Sussex, UK, causing a major response from emergency services.

Nine other passengers suffered minor injuries. All passengers were safely evacuated from the train, while some of the injured were taken to local hospitals, theguardian writes.

The incident happened just before 4pm when the Southern service, travelling from London Victoria to Eastbourne, derailed. Aerial footage shows three of the train's eight carriages overturned on the side of the tracks.

British Transport Police have declared the incident a major incident, while the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

The accident has caused major disruption to rail services. There are currently no trains between Brighton and Lewes, Haywards Heath and Lewes, and between Seaford/Eastbourne and Lewes. Passengers have been asked to delay their journeys or use alternative routes.

Southern has also warned passengers travelling to Gatwick Airport to allow at least 150 minutes extra for their journey. /Telegraph
