Palestinian Authority sets date for first major elections in two decades

The Palestinian Authority has announced that legislative elections will be held in November, marking the first major electoral process in the Palestinian territories in about 20 years.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a decree to hold the elections, which are set for November 28. This will be the first parliamentary vote since 2006, after previously scheduled elections were postponed.
The decision comes at a difficult political period for the Palestinians, divided for years between the Palestinian Authority, which controls parts of the West Bank, and Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip, writes aljazeera .
The elections are seen as an attempt to renew the political legitimacy of Palestinian institutions and respond to international demands for reform. However, major questions remain about how the process will unfold, especially in Gaza, which has been badly damaged by the war.
The Palestinian authorities face numerous challenges, including organizing voting in all Palestinian territories, political participation, and security issues.
If they go ahead as planned, these elections could be the biggest political shift on the Palestinian scene since the clash between Hamas and Fatah after the 2006 elections. /Telegraph/
