The large fire that swept through Omiš, Croatia, and surrounding areas has left 40 people injured, while 14 of them have been hospitalized at Split Hospital.
Seven patients are on ventilators, including six adults and a 17-year-old, it was announced during a press conference, index.hr writes.
The injured have mainly suffered burns, but there are also cases of smoke inhalation injuries and trauma caused during evacuation. In patients with severe burns, the affected body surface area ranges from 15 to 60 percent.
Health authorities are considering the possibility of transferring some patients to Zagreb hospitals, due to the large number of injured.
Doctors have emphasized that patients will not be transferred unless they are in stable condition.
As for the 17-year-old, doctors said he was seriously injured, but his life is not currently in danger. Among the injured are mainly Croatian citizens, but also two foreign citizens, a German and a Polish.
Medical services in Split have been reinforced overnight, with doctors returning from vacation to help treat the injured.
Doctors described the response of the health system as extraordinary and emphasized that all services functioned in a coordinated manner.
Authorities have urged citizens exposed to smoke not to panic and not to immediately go to the hospital unless they have serious symptoms. They are advised to first contact doctors or emergency services on the ground, who will assess whether hospital treatment is needed. /Telegraph/
