A plot to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the failed coup attempt in 2016 has been uncovered.
According to published information, the suspected perpetrators had planned to capture Erdogan at the hotel where he was staying on the night of the coup, then take him out of Turkey on a foreign plane and kill him during the flight, the media wrote.
The plan, however, failed after the Turkish president left the hotel shortly before the group of assassins arrived at the scene.
The coup attempt occurred on July 15, 2016, when a group of military officers attempted to seize control of Turkey's key institutions.
After the clash between government forces and putschists, more than 250 people lost their lives.
The Turkish government has blamed cleric Fethullah Gulen's network for orchestrating the coup, while the now-deceased imam and his supporters have denied the allegations.
