Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that the recent crisis in Ceuta shows the urgent need for a common European approach to illegal migration and the strengthening of the European Union's external borders.
Through a reaction on the X platform, Meloni said that the footage from the Spanish enclave in North Africa has once again shown the scale of the problem and the need for coordinated action among EU member states.
According to her, 22 of the 27 European Union countries have signed a letter calling for joint action to strengthen external border control and prevent the increase in irregular migration.
"Italy's firm stance on illegal migration is now being shared by an increasing number of European countries," Meloni declared.
Her comments come after diplomatic tensions between Rome and Madrid over the situation in Ceuta, where thousands of migrants attempted to cross the border from Morocco into Spanish territory.
Italy has suspended agreements on movement without border controls with Spain after a wave of mass crossings, while Madrid has summoned the Italian ambassador over statements it described as inappropriate for the crisis.
On the other hand, the Spanish government has accused some European countries of a "very selfish attitude", calling for more solidarity and cooperation within the EU to manage migrant flows. /Telegraph/
