The warned American attacks on Iran have begun.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on social media that the operation is being carried out on the orders of US President Donald Trump.

The statement said the aim of the attacks was to "further weaken Iran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."

The attacks followed Iranian media reports earlier in the evening of explosions in the south of the country, in Bandar Abbas and Sirik.

Trump declared today at the NATO summit in Turkey that the United States would attack Iran again, following the attacks carried out the night before.

Both last night's and today's attacks are in response to Iranian attacks on three merchant ships that passed through the Strait of Hormuz this week.

These are the tanker M/T Al Rekayyat, flagged by the Marshall Islands, the tanker M/T Wedyan, flagged by Saudi Arabia, and the ship M/T Cyprus Prosperity, flagged by Liberia. /Telegraph/
