They are the legendary old families, the industrial dynasties of the 20th century, the sports and entertainment dynasties and the political dynasties that have a surprising amount of power for a democratic country.
This list takes a look at America's most impressive families, ranking them by historical legacy, current influence, and wealth.
10. The Ellison family - technology and film luminaries

He was a very humble person, while today Larry Ellison is one of the richest and most powerful people in technology. He was born to a Jewish mother whose family took the Ellison surname from Ellis Island. Larry's mom gave her baby up to some relatives for adoption at a young age and he only got to meet her once.
The college dropout, now 75, built a huge empire from nothing to a fortune of $49.3 billion. He is also a real estate billionaire, which includes the entire island of Hawaii, the Telegraph reports.
Larry's third marriage resulted in the birth of two children, David and Megan. Both of Ellison's children went into the film industry and each owns a successful film production company. The films that have come out from their companies are American Hustle, Her, Star Trek, etc.

Estee Lauder built a cosmetics empire from nothing that earned millions of loyal followers around the world. Today, the company and its descendants are worth billions. She was born to immigrant parents in New York and began making her own cosmetics and selling them in area beauty salons.
With financial help from her father, Estee opened her own store in Manhattan in the mid-1940s. Her husband helped her run the business, and even sons Leonard and Ronald got involved.
Today, the company is still run by the children and grandchildren of the Lauder family. Leonard is the president of the Estee Lauder Cosmetics Company.
