Rizvanolli: Old power plants endanger energy security, we are undertaking historical rehabilitations

Acting Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, has rejected claims that the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) has had cases where it has not produced any electricity at all or that Kosovo has been in an energy collapse.
In a press conference, Rizvanolli said that challenges exist in the energy sector, but stressed that security of supply currently depends on the old 62- and 42-year-old power plants, for which, according to her, proper rehabilitation has never been carried out.
"One reason why not all blocks have been operational since April is because for the first time at the 'Kosova B' power plant we are modernizing the turbines. Block B2 has been out of operation for about 6 months to carry out these works. It is a temporary, but necessary sacrifice. These are not ordinary overhauls, they are interventions that have never been done before," said Rizvanolli.
According to her, current investments include the modernization of turbines, the installation of filters and other improvements that are expected to increase production capacity by 80 megawatts and significantly reduce pollution.
The Minister of Economy also commented on the spread of misinformation regarding energy imports, saying that the recently mentioned figures – over 3 thousand gigawatt hours – are incorrect.
"The import has been between 1 thousand and 1500 gigawatt hours. I don't know where they get this data, but if they refer to ASK, then they should explain the methodology and calculation indicators," she stressed.
Rizvanolli strongly denied claims that Kosovo is importing energy from Serbia, explaining that trade on the lines between the two countries has been blocked since 2020, when Kosovo declared energy independence.
"Energy is not purchased by the Government. For any questions regarding the supply, price and origin of energy, you should contact KESCO, the main supplier that has been a private company since 2013," concluded Rizvanolli.
