Today Islam is the second largest religion in Europe, and it is the religion that spreads the fastest.

The number of Muslims in Europe increased from 29.6 million in 1990 to more than 46 million. Thus, the Muslim population of Europe has increased by almost 50 percent in just 20 years.


According to estimates, in 2030, Muslims will make up 8 percent of the population of Western Europe, and in 2100, every fourth resident of the European Union will be Muslim.

France – IIslam is the second largest religion in France. The majority of Muslims in France belong to first, second and third generation immigrants from former French colonies to countries where Islam is the dominant religion.
The French Muslim community is one of the largest in Europe. Most of the living Muslims are of Arab origin, there are also Turks and French who accepted Islam. Most Muslims live in big cities like Paris and Marseille. There are more than 2100 mosques in France, and the number of Muslims is somewhere over 6 million.

Germany – Between 3,8 and 4.3 million Muslims live in this country, which is about 5 percent of the total population. About 65 percent of them are Sunnis, and in Germany there are also Wahhabis, who are thought to be around 6000, and according to German media reports, most of them are supervised by the German secret services and the police, reports TetovaSot.

Great Britain – Islam in this country is the second religion in the number of believers. According to the 2011 census, 2.7 million Muslims live in Britain, which is about 5 percent of the population there. Most Muslims live in England and Wales (about 1.6 million). 42.000 Muslims live in Scotland, and about 2.000 in Northern Ireland. There are reports that in 2011 the number of Britons who converted to Islam in January reached 100, of which 66 percent were women.

Italy and Spain – Among the five countries with the most Muslims in Western Europe are Italy (1.5 million) and Spain (1 million).

Holland - By 2004, the number of Muslims reached 994 thousand. Today Islam in this country is the second religion in the number of believers. Excluding Christianity, Muslims have more followers than all other religions combined. There are 128 mosques in 380 Dutch cities. There are 29 in Amsterdam and 26 in Rotterdam and 21 in The Hague.

Austria and Sweden – The number of Muslims in Austria as of 2009 is about 500. In Sweden, the numbers are similar. They make up about 4 percent of the population in Austria and about 5 percent in Sweden.

Norway - About 150 Muslims live in this country. Half of them are in Oslo. In recent years, the number of Muslims in this Scandinavian country has increased by 10 percent.
