This is the chaotic moment a performing bear attacked its trainer at the zoo after being enraged by the smell of food.

The black bear launched the attack at the Hangzhou Safari Park in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang on Saturday while being led to the stage, the Telegraph reports.

In dramatic footage, the hungry animal pounced on the zookeeper, knocking him to the ground as visitors watched in horror.

Staff rushed to intervene, surprisingly using a basketball hoop as well as a chair and a bamboo stick to fight off the beast.

According to local reports, the animal was thrown into a frenzy by a large bag of carrots and apples that its trainer was carrying.

In surreal scenes, a parrot joined the fray, perching on a worker's arm as the rescue operation unfolded.

It took 40 seconds to pull the bear away - only for it to launch a second attack on its trainer, almost knocking him to the floor again.

Another black bear on a leash was pulled away by zoo employees during the scuffle.

The trainer and bear both escaped unharmed and have since 'reconciled', the Hangzhou Safari Park said. /Telegraph/
