Twin sisters Louise and Martine Fokken are now Amsterdam's oldest sex workers, with half a century of experience in the sex industry, and together they say they have served more than 335,000 men over the decades.

Amsterdam is known for its "red light" district where it is claimed that you can satisfy even the wildest desires.

But although the employees there "come and go", the two sisters Louise and Martine Fokken have much more experience than the others.

They have already won the title of "oldest widows of the district" in 2012 before retiring.

A documentary titled "The Fokkens Sisters" was made for them, as well as a book documenting their lives.

The two sisters, now in their 70s, talk openly about their past, confessing that they have served more than 335,000 customers over the years.

Louise and Martine live in their apartment in Ijmuiden, west of Amsterdam. Louise's children have long since been taken into state care. She points to a picture she keeps on her shelf, showing little smiling faces.

Speaking to The Guardian, Louise explains how she got into the sex industry.

"My husband used to beat me on the street when I was in my 20s."

"He told me that if I didn't make money he would leave me, and I had children and I loved him so much, so I had to do it."

Meanwhile, Martine was giving birth to her first child when she learned that her sister was working in the infamous windows.

She hadn't realized that Louise was bad about money, so she offered to help her.

Louise adds: "Later they needed a cleaner in the brothel and Martine took the place, but the men started asking her for work."

"So we both started working, sometimes we both ended up in the same window together", she says, referring to the glass windows where the girls are advertised.

The sisters say that within the sex industry, they protected each other.

"We know the tricks, we know what they want. We know how to talk to them and even how to make them laugh", says Louise, adding that they don't have many regrets about their work.

Louise was the first to retire from arthritis, and Martine followed shortly after.

She adds that this industry has deteriorated over time.

"Before, the whole family lived on our earnings, but now the tax office comes and asks you to pay crazy amounts. Now it is better for tourists and foreigners, but not for the Dutch. The hyenas came in the 2000s, the organized crime of prostitution."

Martine adds to the BBC: "Even the boys are different today, they drink more, they are fat and they don't respect you. They should ride bikes like the Dutch do, and not just drink all the time." /tch/
