Discovery of gold 'bunkers' in Peja

On the morning of 13.02.2026, officials from several institutions were gathering at the Peja Prosecutor's Office building, having been summoned by the Chief Prosecutor of Peja, Lumturije Vuçetaj, who in a quick communication indicated that they had received the letter from the Peja Court for inspections in four locations.
Footage from the start of the action to its conclusion was broadcast on the Kallxo Përnime show, tonight on 01.03.2026.
"Welcome to Peja. We have conducted an action in four suspected locations, in which for 6 months now, together with the Economic Crimes Police, we have been conducting investigations regarding activities related to the sale of precious metals of gold and silver. Along with three prosecutors, officials of the Kosovo Tax Administration, officials of the Market Inspectorate from the Ministry of Trade and officials of Kosovo Customs will also be involved in the action," Vuçetaj emphasized.
The operation began in all four locations at the same time. Three prosecutors from Peja were assigned to monitor each step of the raid and to support and direct other state officials in their requests.
Officials from the Kosovo Tax Administration will be involved in verifying the stock within jewelry stores to verify the income and sales in those businesses.
Meanwhile, officials from the Market Inspectorate from the Ministry of Trade must verify the quality and marking of goods that are available for sale. Each valuable good must be marked by Kosovo Metrology before it is put on sale.
For suspicions that smuggled goods may be found during the action, Kosovo Customs officials are present who, with special tools and physical checks of the areas, will check for bunkers and secret closets within the areas where the check will be carried out.
The gold and silver inspection begins at once in two stores in Peja. The owners are informed that during the operation the quality of the gold, its quantity, and even the origin of the precious metal will be checked, as well as other suspicions related to the economic activities within some entities. Initially, prosecutors and other state mechanisms head towards the suspected stores.
"We are implementing a search warrant issued by the Peja Court. We are going to search businesses and also residential buildings," the police officer emphasizes, then asking the owner if there is anything illegal or unlawful inside these buildings.
"I don't have anything illegal - I have a permit for the gun," the owner replies.
After verifying the weapon, it turns out that it has a valid permit, but inside the store there is undeclared gold that is hidden in bunkers behind closed cabinets. Customs officials begin to force open the area behind the cabinets and there are also images of the gold that was hidden and undeclared.
The amount of gold that was found hidden is seized immediately by Kosovo Customs officials. At the scene, the owner of the jewelry store is informed by the customs official that all the gold that was found hidden will be seized by them.
Officials from the Ministry's Inspectorate were still checking for quality seals, as well as for control seals from the Ministry of Trade. But the checks were only continuing for the visible gold, not for what had been found hidden.
The inspection at the second store continues at the same time. There, each item inside is verified. There, too, inspectors check whether the gold has the stamps it should have.
The information that there is hidden goods in the first store is shared by the prosecution with the Kosovo Customs investigators. Using special tools, they begin a detailed inspection of the closed spaces and walls of the store. The hidden gold is also found in the other store, which was being inspected since the morning of that day. Inside the armored safe there is a space where the gold was hidden and which was not declared by the employees in the store.
Bunkers in the areas of the armored safe are also found in the house. There, the safe was opened only in its main parts but not in all areas. Customs officials begin a detailed check and manage to open the part where quantities of gold and cash were hidden.
During this operation, in addition to gold and other valuables, an illegal long gun was also seized. The Peja Prosecutor's Office emphasizes that they are awaiting the decisive analysis to proceed with the next investigations into this case.
