President Donald Trump said "something could happen" over the next two days in Pakistan as the US and Iran try to return to the negotiating table.

"You have to stay there, really, because something could happen over the next couple of days, and we're more inclined to go there," Trump told a New York Post reporter on assignment in Islamabad.

"More likely, you know why? Because the field marshal is doing a great job," the US president added, the Telegraph reports.

Trump was referring to Pakistan's Field Marshal, General Asim Munir, calling him "fantastic."

Geneva has also been mentioned as another possible location for peace talks, but Trump appeared to downplay this possibility.

"Why should we go to a place that has nothing to do with it?" Trump said. /Telegraph
