The Athletic: FIFA will create a play-off if Iran withdraws from the World Cup

Football's governing body FIFA is in discussions to set up a last-minute play-off in case Iran ultimately decides to withdraw from the World Cup.
Affected by the political situation, Iran's participation in the World Cup is in serious doubt, while a final decision has not yet been made.
FIFA has started working on an alternative, with the British media outlet "The Athletic” which reports that the home of football is considering organizing a last-minute “play-off”.
Unfortunately, only four national teams will play in this play-off, two from Europe and two from Asia.
It is not yet clear how the European national teams will be selected, but if you look at the world rankings, then Kosovo is not on the list at all, since it is ranked last of the four national teams that went to the play-off final last month.
Despite the elimination in the final playoff for the hand of Bosnia, Italy's participation in the 2026 World Cup, which will be disputed from 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Canada and Mexico, is not an impossible scenario. Il nodo della questione è legato... pic.twitter.com/10mMcHGih9

If we look at the world rankings, then Italy has the most realistic chances as it occupies the 12th position, while after them Denmark – as the 20th place. Poland occupies the 35th position, while Kosovo only occupies the 78th place.
More developments are expected in the coming weeks, as it is not yet official whether Iran will withdraw from the 2026 World Cup or not. The report adds that a final decision could be made on May 12, a month before the world's most important national team competition begins.Telegrafi/
