A mosque in the middle of the village? Many people in Siebnen didn't want this - now they've achieved their goal.

The Albanian Muslim community, which wanted to transform the historic house in the village's main square into an Islamic cultural center, is abandoning its plans for the time being.

This, after reaching 5,000 signatures, made the community reconsider the decision.

"We do not want to divide the population," the head of the Muslim community, Sinan Sadriu, told the "Rundschau" program.

He also said he didn't want to face scolding.

The Albanian community is now looking for another location for the mosque.

The resistance was considerable: the local SVP collected around 5,000 signatures against the plans of the Albanian Muslim community. A mosque “does not belong in the middle of the village,” explains Rita Rutz, owner of a knitting shop opposite the house that was planned to become a mosque, writes, reports SRF, transmits albinfo.

The resistance in Siebnen is not an isolated case. The idea of mosques in the region is not an isolated case.

Recently, for example, resistance to such projects also arose in the suburbs of Bern (Wittigkofen) and in St. Gallen.

The often-cited argument is that "foreign culture" does not fit in with Switzerland.
