Fire at a Rivian plant in Illinois – over 50 electric cars are reported to have been damaged

A fire broke out in a parking lot at Rivian's Normal, Illinois, plant over the weekend.

As a result, more than 50 electric vehicles were damaged there, foreign media reports, Telegraph reports.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

A Fire Department spokesperson told The Verge that a report of a fire was called in at 21:43 p.m. Saturday at the Rivian plant.

Rivian is now leading the investigation into the nature of the fire, along with the company's insurance company, with city fire officials providing support as needed, Fire Department spokesman Matt Swaney said in an email.

"It's a very complicated and complex investigation, so we don't have a timeline on when or if any origin or cause can be determined at this time," Swaney added.

"The assembly plant itself is unaffected by the incident. There were no injuries in the fire brigade or Rivian personnel".

Fire is increasingly becoming a major risk factor for electric vehicle manufacturers, as lithium-ion battery "cells" can burn extremely quickly and are resistant to traditional prevention methods. /Telegraph/
