World boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk arrested in Poland - President Zelensky had to intervene to secure his release

The absolute heavyweight champion of the world in boxing, the Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk was arrested at the Krakow airport, while the video of the arrest appeared all over social networks.

The 37-year-old boxer planned to fly to Valencia, Spain where he wants to prepare for the rematch against Tyson Fury (36) for the match in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on December 21.

The Ukrainian was detained under unclear circumstances and later declared to be a misunderstanding. A video posted on social networks shows Usyk leaving the police in handcuffs.


It took Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to urgently intervene in the case, after which Usyk was released.

"There was a misunderstanding. Everything was resolved quickly. Thanks to everyone who cared. Thanks to Ukrainian diplomats for their efficient support," Usyk wrote on Twitter, but did not reveal why he was arrested.

However, the media reports that he had trouble boarding the flight he was on with his wife after a 14-hour journey from Kiev. Due to the language barrier and Usyk's anger and reaction, he was eventually arrested.

Usyk is probably the most famous Ukrainian boxer and is a national hero in his homeland.

In September 2021, he became the world champion in the IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO versions and in May of this year he also won the WBC belt after defeating Tyson Fury and becoming the undisputed world champion. /Telegraph/
