The reason why Leo Messi was not present when he was given the 'Medal of Freedom' by President Joe Biden is known
Leo Messi was one of those awarded the 'Medal of Liberty', the highest honor given by the United States government to people with "exemplary contributions to prosperity, values or security".
But the Argentine star who is now making a career in the USA did not attend the ceremony to receive the medal from President Joe Biden.
The reason was some problems with the schedule that made it impossible for Leo Messi to be present, since he is not in the United States of America.
In fact, the star warned in advance that he would not be able to participate and offered him the opportunity to receive the medal when he returned to the country, as he is currently in Argentina.
Leo Messi knew he would be awarded this 'Medal of Freedom' at the end of December, when he already had a series of commitments in his home country that prevented him from being on American soil this Saturday to receive it that from the hands of Joe Biden.
Upon learning, he sent a message of gratitude to the President of the United States through a letter sent on his behalf by Inter Miami, in which he described it as a "deep honor" and a "great privilege" to was awarded this decoration.
"Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment and will not be able to attend the ceremony at the White House on January 4. However, I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate this gesture", says the letter in question.
The list of other notable people who received the 'Medal of Freedom' at the event held at the White House this Saturday includes Spanish chef José Andrés, former basketball player 'Magic' Johnson, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington.
