Brisk walking is more effective in reducing the risk of heart disease than running when energy expenditure for these activities is actually balanced.

Research has shown that running can reduce the risk of heart disease by 4.5 percent, but walking can reduce this risk by 9.3 percent.

Walking had a greater impact on factors that increase the risk of heart disease. Walking reduced the risk of hypertension by 7.2 percent, while running reduced it by 4.2 percent. Also, walking reduced the risk of high cholesterol by seven percent and running by 4.3 percent. When it comes to diabetes, the results are the same. In both cases, the risk is reduced by 12 percent.

Doctor and study leader Paul Williams of the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory in California concluded that walking and running at a moderate intensity have tremendous health benefits because both involve the same muscle groups.

But if you're not in shape, picking up the pace and running can be bad for your body. According to a report published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, people who engage in vigorous physical activity are likely to miss out on the benefits of walking.

Individuals who ran at a brisk pace for more than four hours per week and more than three times per week experienced the same risk of death as individuals who sat for long periods and did not exercise at all.

At the same time, walking is an amazing activity for beginners or people who have been diagnosed with a certain health problem. Obese people will put their bodies under less stress if they choose to walk instead of run.

Running is repetitive in nature, so the risk of injury is quite high compared to walking. Running can damage your knees, hips and ankles more quickly. On the other hand, walking is a low-impact activity and causes less damage to the body.
