Volkswagen's new compact hatchback will be an exclusively electric vehicle and will be built on the upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP).

A few weeks ago, VW and American automaker Rivian launched a $5.8 billion joint venture to design the electrical architecture and software for next-generation cars. The Golf 9 will probably be the first vehicle on that platform.

Speaking to Automotive News, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer confirmed that VW needs Rivian's help to work on a radical change to the concept of its iconic car.

“We decided to create a software-defined vehicle. This will happen with Rivia and the joint venture," Schafer asserted.

In this way, in a way, Volkswagen confirmed that it needs help in the development of electric platforms. The new Volkswagen Golf will be launched in 2029.

Since the Golf 9 won't hit the market for the next four years, VW still has plenty of time to improve the current ID.3 electric compact.

A completely redesigned version with better hardware and a higher quality interior with more physical buttons is coming in 2026.

The arrival of the new Golf in five years will probably result in the end of ID.3 electronic production. Also, the Golf 8 will remain in production until 2035. So, golf that uses gasoline, diesel and hybrid systems. /Telegraph/
