YOUR POSSIBLE PAST

YOUR POSSIBLE PAST

By: Roger Waters (Pink Floyd, song Your Possible Pasts from the album The Final Cut, 1983)
Translated by: Agron Shala

Behind your back they whisper your possible pasts
Some naive and lively, some scary and harmful
A warning to anyone still keeping the situation under control
"Line up! attack"
To be careful about their possible pasts
On abandoned railway tracks, poppies are trapped
While the wagons with victims wait for the next chance

Do you remember me? How were we once?
Do you think we could have been closer?

With a faint smile, she stood in the doorway
With his face blazing like the neon of a cheap hotel
Her icy gaze beseeched the suspicious men
For their blessing or judgment
With a bold step forward, one extends his hand
He said: "Once I was a child, now I am only a man"

Do you remember me? How were we once?
Do you think we could have been closer?

We were subdued by the disdain and the religious
They taught us how to feel good and taught us how to feel bad
With our mouths closed and terrified, we learned how to pray
Our senses were turned upside down and breathless
They hung the banners and flags behind us
Of our possible past that lies in tattered rags

Do you remember me? How were we once?
Do you think we could have been closer?
