THERE WAS A MAN AND A WOMAN

THERE WAS A MAN AND A WOMAN
Stephen Crane (1871–1900)

Poem by: Stephen Crane
Translated by: Irena Dono

I
There was a man and a woman,
who fell into sin.
Then the man hung the punishment around his neck.
all of that.
And he left happily.

II
There was a man and a woman,
who fell into sin.
And the man stayed with her.
And the sentence fell
both on his head and on her head.
And all the people shouted, "Fool!"
He had a brave heart.

III
He had a brave heart.
Will you talk to him, friend?
Well, he's dead.
And now that you've lost the chance,
let your sadness go
to the one who died.
Even though you missed the opportunity,
because you were a coward.
