Don't ignore the symptoms! Anemia isn't just fatigue – it's an alarm from your body

How to understand anemia? Symptoms and causes that we should not ignore!

Dr. Spice Y. Durmishi

Anemia is a disease where the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells – in other words they do not carry enough hemoglobin, or it occurs when these cells do not do the job they are supposed to do.

Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen to the body and removing carbon dioxide from the body.

If these processes do not work properly, then we are poisoned by carbon dioxide.

The causes of anemia can be different. It's normal that we all get tired from time to time, but if most of the following symptoms apply to you, then you better go to the doctor.

There are other causes of anemia besides iron deficiency, vitamins, or genetic problems. Here are some of the most important:

Chronic blood loss. From stomach ulcers, hemorrhoids, intestinal polyps or gastrointestinal cancer. In women: very heavy menstruation or childbirth with heavy bleeding.

Kidney diseasesThe kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin, which stimulates the production of red blood cells. When the kidneys do not function properly, anemia occurs.

Chronic inflammatory diseasesSuch as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or chronic infections that suppress the bone marrow.

Malignant tumorsCancer can impair blood cell production or cause internal bleeding.

Severe infectionsSome infections, such as HIV/AIDS or hepatitis, can directly damage the bone marrow.

AlcoholismAlcohol damages the bone marrow and prevents the absorption of nutrients.

Exposure to toxinsIndustrial chemicals, radiation, or some strong medications can cause aplastic anemia.

Bone marrow disordersSuch as leukemia or myelofibrosis, which directly affect the production of blood cells.

Depending on the cause, anemia can be temporary or chronic, and treatment varies greatly.

Yellow skin

When the body does not get enough oxygen or suffers from a reduced number of red blood cells, our skin color changes and we look very pale. This is not only applied to the face, but to the whole body – especially the hands, the inside of the eyelids and the tongue.

Irregular heartbeats

Low hemoglobin levels make the heart work harder than normal to pump blood through our system. So the heart has to work harder than usual to saturate us with oxygen, and this results in irregular heartbeats.

Fatigue

If the organs do not have enough oxygen, our body works harder to produce energy in order to carry out daily functions, and this leaves us feeling very tired.

Problems with concentration

All our organs need oxygen to function well, and the brain is no exception here. If the oxygen level is lower than we need, then we will not be able to think clearly and will suffer from poor concentration.

Thinning of nails

If the nails become weak or create a spoon shape, then this is a symptom of anemia.

Lip cracks

Most of us experience dry or chapped lips from time to time from wind, sun, or cold temperatures, but anemia causes these in certain areas, specifically the corners of the lips.

Take care of your health!

Eat healthy: Eat foods rich in iron (red meat, spinach, beans), vitamin B12 (eggs, milk, meat), and folic acid (green vegetables, citrus fruits).
Food supplements: Use iron, B12, or folic acid supplements only with a doctor's recommendation.
Regular medical check-up: I do blood tests and visits to monitor the condition.
Healthy lifestyle: Avoid excessive alcohol and unnecessary stress that affects overall health.
