Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders in football and won his latest trophy for Liverpool in Sunday's final against Chelsea.

Van Dijk's 118th-minute header secured a narrow 1-0 win for Liverpool, who had five players under the age of 21 on the pitch after the final whistle.

The 31-year-old was named Liverpool's permanent captain at the start of the season, replacing Jordan Henderson who left for the Middle East.

Over the years, fans have undoubtedly noticed that Liverpool's number four doesn't play with his surname on the back of his shirt, he just uses 'Virgil' instead.

According to Steven Fo Sieeuw, Van Dijk's maternal cousin, Van Dijk gave up the surname because of his father.

Fo Sieeuw had said in an interview for The Sun earlier: His father separated from his mother who had three children, including Virgil.

"The truth is that his father has not been close to him for several important years, and his mother has been the real heroine of this story."

"You don't take your father's name off the shirt for no reason, and Virgil has made it clear how he feels," Sieeuw said./Telegraph/
