The most populous American state calls an extraordinary session to "armor" the laws because of Trump

The governor of the US's most populous state says he will call a special session of the legislature to protect the state's laws from Donald Trump.

Gavin Newsom, the governor of California who was once a favorite to be Kamala Harris' running mate, said the 78-year-old's victory threatens the values of the majority-Democratic state.

The state, home to 39 million people, gave Harris a 17-point lead over Trump with 60 percent of the vote counted and last voted for a Republican president in 1988.

"The liberties we cherish in California are under attack — and we will not stand idly by," Newsom said, reports skynews.

The governor predicts the president-elect will pursue "unconstitutional and illegal federal policies" that will harm Californians or conflict with state laws in areas such as reproductive health, climate change and immigration.

When they meet on Dec. 2, California politicians should consider increasing funding for the state's justice department in order to challenge these policies in court, he said.

During Trump's tenure between 2017 and 2021, California filed more than 120 lawsuits against his administration's policies, Newsom said.

Newsom's office told The Associated Press that the governor and politicians are ready to "armor" California state laws against Trump. /Telegraph/
