Moment of asteroid impact in Earth's atmosphere

The unusual footage released below shows the moment an asteroid collides with Earth's atmosphere over Siberia.

The asteroid named COWECP5 appeared overnight, after NASA had detected it in the system and warned about its explosion, the Telegraph reports.

Residents of the area posted on social media what appeared to be the asteroid exploding in the sky - turning into a "fireball" before disappearing.

Emergency teams in Yakutia announced that authorities were on alert before the asteroid approached, but determined shortly before the explosion that it would cause no damage.

A NASA-funded telescope in Arizona identified the asteroid about seven hours before impact, revealing that it was about 27 inches in diameter. /Telegraph/
