If you have ever visited Rome, you may have seen the famous Di Trevi fountain of the Italian capital, where tourists throw coins in exchange for a 'wish'.

Every year, about 1.5 million euros end up in the fountain of this spectacular monument that dates from the 18th century, Telegrafi reports.

But where does this money go?

Several times a year, the Italian authorities send a special team to collect this money. With multiple methods, they take this money out of the fountain and then put it in the bag under the watch of the police.

The money collected from the Trevi Fountain is then donated to a charity that helps people in need. This money has been a great impetus for the organization and constitutes 15 percent of the annual budget.

The group also funds other charitable activities, including funding shelters.

But why do they throw them away?

Legend has it that if you throw money with your right hand over your left, then you will be lucky and one day you will return to Rome. /Telegraph/
