Justice Department withdraws lawsuit against John Bolton over book

The US Justice Department has dropped its lawsuit against John Bolton, President Donald Trump's former short-term national security adviser, over his book that officials argued revealed classified information, according to court documents and Bolton's legal representatives.

Prosecutors also suspended a grand jury investigation into the book's publication, Mr. Bolton's lawyer said Wednesday.

Former President Trump's administration filed a lawsuit last year to block the publication of Bolton's book, "The Room Where It Happened," and to recover copies of the book that had already been distributed.

The book, published on the eve of the 2020 presidential election, offered behind-the-scenes details and unflattering assessments of Trump's foreign policy dealings.

It described how Trump asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to help his re-election prospects and how Trump pressed his Ukrainian counterpart for political investigations.

Justice Department lawyers who sued Mr. Bolton over the book had insisted that the manuscript contained classified information that could harm national security and that Bolton, a former US ambassador to the United Nations, had not completed a vetting process. prior to publication designed to prevent disclosure of government secrets.

On Wednesday, the Biden administration filed a document in federal court dropping the lawsuit, officially ending the year-long court battle.
