The bill on reproductive health fails in the second reading

The Assembly of Kosovo has failed to vote in the second reading the draft law on reproductive health (IVF) during a session on Thursday, due to the absence of deputies in the vote.

61 MPs were present in the hall, enough to pass the legislation, but the vote was abandoned by two MPs from the ruling party, Vetëvendosje Movement.

This is the fifth time in a row that the government tries to vote on the amendments proposed by Vetëvendosje deputy, Visar Korenica.

The vote was also abandoned by the main opposition parties, the Democratic League of Kosovo, the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo.

The vote has stalled on the fourth amendment, for which deputy Visar Korenica had asked for changes to be made during a session on February 22.

Korenica requested that three paragraphs should be removed from the legislation, which provide that the right to reproduction also belongs to individuals, in addition to married couples (husband and wife).

As a reference to individuals, he has mentioned unmarried women and same-sex partners.

In October of last year, after many efforts, the Assembly managed to approve this Draft Law in the first reading with 63 votes for, one against and four abstentions.

This legislation enables even unmarried women to give birth to children through the method of assisted fertilization, known as IVF, in public clinics.
